Dawn Anderson and Jeff Kidston are both from the state of Washington and work in the civil engineering field. Their interest in photography started in the mid 1980s, and their interest in Macaws started in the early 1990s. This interest in photography and Macaws soon took them to the Tambopata - Candamo Reserve Zone of southeastern Peru, which is one of the world's best bird watching spots. Within this Reserve is the largest know clay lick and one of only two known licks where the Blue and Gold Macaws come to eat the clay. After trips in 1996, '97, and '98, the photographers decided it was time to share the wonders of the Macaws of Peru with the world.
